Good morning, Christ Church! This past Sunday afternoon, Janie and I had the pleasure of gathering with other members of this diocese in front of St. John’s, Lafayette Square. We were there to represent that congregation’s several centuries of faithful presence in the heart of the city. Specifically, we were there to support the protesters with bottles of water, snacks, prayer, and words of encouragement. Please be assured that we were doubly masked and made liberal use of Purell about…

Dear Christ Church Family, There is so much that discourages us right now. To discourage means to lose courage and to take courage out of others. Never has the ministry of Encouragement, putting courage into others, been more needed. Today we celebrate the life and ministry of the saint who defined this ministry with his life. His story follows. Peace,Rick+ Thursday, June 11, 2020                       RCL Daily Office Readings, Year 2 AM Psalm [70], 71PM Psalm 74Eccles. 11:1-8Gal. 5:16-24Matt. 16:13-20  Saints Day…

Dear Christ Church Family, Today, Jesus speaks out against the “yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees,” warning us that we are just as capable as the Disciples of hearing a message other than God’s, especially when we are actually listening to our own cultural religion. Dear Christ Church Family, What do an Eastern Market fish and today’s reading from Matthew have in common? Well, maybe nothing. Except to remind us how to help Jesus do a miracle. Sound “fishy”? Check it out. Dear Christ Church Family, This Gospel story from Matthew is such a troubling one, especially in light of the current troubles in our own land, that I’ve revisited this lesson from a few months ago. Then, it was about our personal responses to Covid-19. Now it is about so much more. Good morning, Christ Church! On Sunday, I came across the following passage from Thomas Merton. I have struggled with it ever since: “Instead of loving what you think is peace, love other men and love God above all. And instead of hating the people you think are warmongers, hate the appetites and the disorder in your own soul, which are the causes of war. If you love peace, then hate injustice, hate tyranny, hate greed – but hate these things…

Dear Christ Church Family, Are we watching the end or a new beginning? It’s a question that is going through the minds of many of us right now as we look out our windows. The Psalmist in our Psalm today had the same question. Dear Christ Church Family, We are currently trying to disinfect our surroundings and protect ourselves from any incoming threat of infection. But what about our spiritual, interior surroundings? Is there anything to do there? Consider Paul’s advice today. Dear Christ Church Family, Increasingly these days, on TV and in conversations, we are hearing that people are not capable of change; that who we are and will ever be is all decided before the age of 6. But it’s not true! As Christians, we are in the Redemption business, and we are led by one who is The Redeemer. Our lesson from Galatians briefly refers to one who was changed, not just in attitude, but in character. He was…

Dear Christ Church Family, Is it possible to know joy in these times of social unrest, tragic death, and human hate? Jesus tells us today that there is such a thing as an unassailable joy. He even tells us how to find it.
