Dear Christ Church Family, The current events of the Pandemic have brought many things we usually take for granted, and other things we just ignore, into sharp relief. Most of us are lamenting the new conditions and restrictions upon our lives. Some of our laments are trivial, but others run deep. Our Scriptures are calling to us today, to make one lament in particular our focus this week. Peace,Rick+ Wednesday, April 8, 2020                    RCL Daily Office Readings, Year 2…

Dear Christ Church Family, Does a broken prayer still work? Can God understand us, even when we can’t find the words that say what we think and feel? We’ve all had such prayers; ones that just don’t say what we want, that don’t sound/feel as though we’ve made ourselves understood. When those prayers happen, will God still “get” us? Psalm 6 can help us answer that question, along with a little help from the Apostle Paul. Peace, Rick+ Tuesday, April…

Dear Christ Church Family, I commend the words of Psalm 51 to you this day. Actually, every day. In the long tradition of Christian and Jewish devotional practice, only a few Psalms are more recited or committed to memory. In the Lutheran Liturgy, the verses of it that start, “Create in me a clean heart O God,” are sung at every offertory before Communion. In the Anglican/Episcopal Liturgy, these same words are prayed by the priests as they wash their…

Hello Christ Church! I really want to thank Rick for initiating these daily devotions. They have become a beacon in these strange and uncertain days. These reflections have reminded us that, even as we shelter in place, God’s kingdom is always rooted in community. It has been powerful knowing that, as I read them, you are doing the same, and in that act, while not gathered physically, we are a community in spirit. Thanks be to God. Rick has asked…

Dear Christ Church Family, This morning, a young mother and her child reminded me of the way to serenity. She is the Psalmist, the composer of this morning’s Psalm 131. I can’t imagine a more needed message for our times. Dear Christ Church Family and Friends, Sometimes the news is just plain grim, and we can lose hope. Sometimes, the condition of our own sinfulness is grim, and hope escapes us. But, losing hope in any circumstance is not what God wants for us. God wants us to always hope; to hope in his love for us that will never fail us no matter what. The lessons today contain a short Psalm that says all that in just eight short…

Dear Christ Church Family, There is real power in remembering. That’s especially true when our remembering is of God’s goodness to us in the past. It has the power to renew our faith, and to bring us through even the worst moments of our lives. That’s what Psalm 126 demonstrates today. Peace,Rick+ Tuesday, March 31, 2020RCL Daily Office Readings, Year 2 AM Psalm [120], 121, 122, 123 PM Psalm 124, 125, 126, [127] Exod. 5:1-6:1 1 Cor. 14:20-33a,39-40 Mark 9:42-50 Saint Day John…

Dear Christ Church Family, Our lesson from the Gospel According to Mark has a question for us. When we think of who our “us” is, are we excluding Jesus? The Disciples are faced with this very question today. Peace,Rick+ Monday, March 30, 2020                    RCL Daily Office Readings, Year 2 AM Psalm 31 PM Psalm 35 Exod. 4:10-20 (21-26) 27-31 1 Cor. 14:1-19 Mark 9:30-41 Saints Days John Climacus, Innocent of Alaska A Lenten question: Does our “us” include Jesus?   I have…

Dear Christ Church Family, Most of these Daily Devotionals have been written with the current crisis in mind; hoping to help us all find a more spiritual and healing way to deal with it. Today, though, I hope that we can turn for a few moments and remember that this is still the Holy Season of Lent; a time most especially to deepen our loving friendship with Jesus. The Gospel reading today is from Mark’s account of the Transfiguration. That…

Dear Christ Church Family, Listening to the news really can bring us to despair. It’s not just the threat of the Covid-19 virus that can affect us, it’s also the differing responses to that threat that can make us throw up our hands. When all that is added to the pile by commentators who are openly advocating the interests of the “haves” at the extreme expense, even death, of the “have-nots,” we can come to wonder, “Where is God in…
