Good morning, Christ Church! I want to again thank Rick+ for giving me the opportunity to work on these Friday meditations. It has been a real blessing to have something “other” to think about than whatever happens to be in the daily news cycle. Indeed, it has become a discipline that brings meaning to the rest of the week, and for that I am most thankful. I also want to thank Laurie Gethin for her excellent editing, technological skills, and…

Dear Christ Church Family, In today’s Gospel lesson, Jesus calls us all to become Seekers; a people who can let go of worry, because they seek to put God first in life. If we have ever needed to hear how to let go of worry, this is the time for this word from Jesus. Dear Christ Church Family, Some Bible words are a bit hard to grasp. When we see them in a Scripture passage, we can tend to gloss over them as words to “get through” rather than understand. In today’s lesson from I Thessalonians, we encounter one of those most commonly glossed-over words. So, I’m taking this devotional to explain it, because to understand it can change our relationship with God. Read on. Peace,Rick+ Wednesday, May 13, 2020                   RCL Daily Office…

Dear Family and Friends of Christ Church, The Lord’s Prayer isn’t a magic formula for prayer. It isn’t strictly a model for all other prayers we might pray. It is, however, a prayer that pulls us into the mind of God, and lets God pray into us God’s thoughts and desires. This morning we consider just one of its petitions designed to accomplish this in us. Peace,Rick+ Tuesday, May 12, 2020                         RCL Daily Office Readings, Year 2 AM Psalm 61,…

Dear Christ Church Family, Our current crisis is causing us all to consider how our personal habits might affect those around us. For some around us, this is a novel and new idea. But you might be surprised to know that this has always been the case for God’s people. In our reading from Leviticus today, we find out that our personal habits matter a great deal to God; they even have an impact on our worship. Peace,Rick+ Monday, May…

Good Morning, Christ Church! I am trying to spend less time on social media. That may seem counter-intuitive in our present circumstances. But so much that is posted, beyond the personal stories of those we love, is just so toxic. The vitriol, sarcasm, and anger contained in many posts tends to fuel the same in me, and that I do not need! However, every once in a while, I receive something that is truly beautiful in the truest sense of…

Dear Christ Church Family, Sometimes we think we have God all figured out. But often that’s only because we have misunderstood God. At times like that, we desperately need a course correction in our thinking. In our passage from Exodus today, Moses gets such a correction, and it changes his life, and starts a change in the life of all Israel that reaches down to you and me today. Check it out! Peace,Rick+ Thursday, May 7, 2020                         RCL Daily…

Dear Christ Church Family, Some passages of Scripture, especially some recorded encounters with God, can be difficult to understand; especially understand how they can make a difference in our own encounters with God, or understand how they can change our lives. One of those difficult passages is in our lesson from Exodus today. But take a look. It is telling us something amazing. Dear Christ Church Family, In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus calls all of us to be light; to be a shining example to the glory of God. Is there a way, a method for doing this? Of becoming light to the World, ourselves? “Yes!” says Paul in our Epistle lesson. Have a look. Dear Christ Church Family, “Blessings abound!” “Count your blessings!” “Be a blessing!” All these very true truisms come to life in our readings for today. Understanding two of these readings in particular will help us catch a truth about blessings. May you be blessed in catching it.
